"The Accommodation of Protestant Christianity
with the Enlightenment: The Core of
American Religious History"
Dr. David Hollinger
Professor, Dept of History
University of California, Berkeley
David Hollinger link gives an overview of American religious history which concentrates on 1) the overwhelmingly Protestant character of the American population for most of American history, 2) the embedding of Enlightenment traditions in American life through the secular character of the Constitution, and 3) the centrality to American life of the enduring quarrel over the cultural capital of Protestantism by two rival parties, one that we have come to call "evangelical" (or "orthodox") and one that we have come to call "ecumenical" (or "liberal").
